Nightwear Care Advice: How to Keep Your Nightwear Feeling Soft, Fresh and Fabulous

After a long and stressful day, there is nothing better than getting home and slipping into your favourite nightwear. Whether it’s soft pyjamas, a luxurious nightdress, a fleecy bedjacket or a cosy dressing gown. Whatever the garment, the way we care for your nightwear can make all the difference, helping it stay comfortable, fresh and beautiful for longer.

Nightwear is often washed frequently, so choosing the right washing, drying and storage methods can make a massive difference. From checking the care label to avoiding overly hot washes, a little extra care can help protect delicate fabrics, maintain the fit and keep your favourite pieces feeling as good as the day you bought them.

Always Check the Care Label First

Now this might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how often we don’t check the label for the washing instructions, and you just throw it in with the rest of the laundry. However, checking the label is very important as different fabrics and styles can have different requirements and making sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions is the best way to keep your nightwear fresh and help it last longer.

The care label will usually tell you:

  • The recommended washing temperature
  • Whether the garment can be machine washed or should be hand washed
  • Whether it is suitable for tumble drying
  • Whether it can be ironed
  • Whether it requires specialist or dry cleaning

It can be tempting to throw everything into the washing machine together, but delicate nightwear deserves a little more attention.

Wash Nightwear at the Right Temperature

We can be inclined to wash our nightwear at a high temperature as we think it keeps items cleaner, however STOP! This can cause fabrics to shrink, fade or lose their softness which can affect the fit of your nightwear and the technology around washing powder has improved so washing at a high temperature is no longer needed. In a lot of cases you will find that the label will tell you to wash at a much lower temperature usually around 30°C, which will reduce wear and tear and still keep everything fresh and clean.

Protect Delicate Nightwear

Some nightwear needs a little extra protection in the washing machine. Delicate fabrics, lace, satin, mesh and garments with decorative details can benefit from being placed inside a laundry bag. A laundry bag can help prevent delicate garments from becoming caught on zips, buttons or other items in the wash. It is also a good idea to fasten buttons and any other closures before washing to help prevent snagging.

Use a Gentle Detergent

Choosing the right detergent can make all the difference, it can help preserve the fabric and softness of your nightwear, while a mild wash powder is a good choice for fabrics that are worn close to the skin this also includes your underwear especially if you suffer with sensitive skin this can be a life saver.

Something we are all guilty of and sometimes we don’t even realise we are doing it is using too much detergent. This can lead to residue in the fabric which can affect how soft and comfortable your nightwear feels. Fabric conditioner should also be used according to the garment's care instructions. While it can make some fabrics feel softer, it isn't suitable for every material and can sometimes affect the performance or texture of specialist fabrics.

Avoid Overloading the Washing Machine

It can be tempting to fill the washing machine to the brim especially when you can see your laundry piling up, but overcrowding prevents garments from moving freely through the wash. Giving your nightwear enough space allows the detergent and water to circulate properly and can help reduce unnecessary creasing and friction.

Where possible, wash similar colours together as darker colours can run and stain lighter coloured items and its also better to separate particularly delicate garments from heavier items such as towels, jeans or bedding as the heaver items can cause friction in the washing machine and this can lead to more delicate items becoming damaged.

 Be Careful When Drying Nightwear

Now this might surprise you but how you dry your nightwear is just as important as how you wash it.

Always check the care label before putting nightwear in the tumble dryer. High temperatures can cause some fabrics to shrink, damage delicate fibres or affect elasticated sections. Even if tumble drying is possible, air drying can be a much gentler alternative. Hang or lay garments, and avoid leaving delicate nightwear in direct, strong sunlight for prolonged periods, as this can cause some colours to fade. For garments that can stretch easily, laying them flat to dry may help them retain their original shape.

 Don't Wring Delicate Fabrics

If the instructions require you to hand wash the garment, then be careful not to twist or wring the garment to get out the excess water as this can cause over stretching and stress on the fabrics. What works better is to gently press out the water and then roll the garment in a clean towel to absorb the excess water.

 Iron With Care

Not all nightwear needs ironing. In fact, some fabrics are best left alone or an alterative can just be letting them dry on a hanger, this can get the creases to drop out as the garment drys.

If your nightwear does require ironing or you prefer a nicely ironed nightwear always check the care label and use the recommended temperature. Be careful with delicate fabrics such as satin, lace and certain synthetic materials can be damaged easily by excessive heat. A steamer can be a great investment as it can be a gentler way to remove creases, but again, always follow the garment's care instructions.

Store Your Nightwear Properly

Now this one might surprise you but good storage can help your nightwear maintain its shape between wears.

Fold pyjamas, nightdresses and other soft garments neatly rather than cramming them into an overcrowded drawer, which I know I can be guilty of also its best to make sure the garments are completely dry before putting them away to prevent musty smells.

Give Your Nightwear a Break

We all have our favourites, but wearing and washing the same piece of nightwear night after night can lead to faster wear. If possible, rotate your nightwear collection. Having several pairs of pyjamas or nightdresses allows each garment time to rest between wears and washes, helping reduce repeated stress on the fabric and elastic.

It also means you have the perfect excuse to treat yourself to another beautiful pair!

How Often Should You Wash Nightwear?

One of the most asked questions we get about nightwear is how often should nightwear be washed? And this all depends on the garment, fabric, how it is worn and you’re your personal preference.

Nightwear worn directly against the skin should generally be washed regularly, particularly during warmer weather or if you tend to sweat during the night however if you wear your nightwear over another layer, such as a camisole or underwear, it may not need washing quite as frequently. The important thing is to keep your nightwear fresh while avoiding unnecessary washing that could shorten the life of the fabric.
